What to play this week: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and a Wuhu bowling night

This week at a glance

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Final Fantasy Resonance both launch this week, but the game worth clearing a living-room evening for is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on Thursday. If the shooter is not your house’s genre, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the better way to spend the money.

What we’d play this week

Top tip of the week: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch 2, Friday October 23. It is the biggest release of the month by a distance. The campaign is a Korean-peninsula invasion story with Captain Price running a parallel shadow war, and preorder buyers have had campaign access since October 16. This is a shooter for the adults in the house, so check the age rating on the box before it goes on a wish list.

With the family: Nintendo Switch Sports Resort

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort — Switch 2, Thursday October 22. The easiest yes of the week: 12 sports on Wuhu Island, and 100-pin bowling is back, the mode where a five-year-old can beat a grown-up. It runs on the Joy-Con 2 motion controls of a Switch 2, and a second Joy-Con pair turns it into a four-player evening.

From the backlog: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (5/5)

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — PS5. If Modern Warfare 4 is not your household’s genre, this is still the best PS5 action game you can buy outright instead, and it earned a perfect 5 from us. Get it on PS5 here.
