The Anime, Korra, the Live-Action & the New Avatar Studios Era

Avatar: The Last Airbender is, for our money, the best animated series ever made — a kids' show that grew up with a generation and never once talked down to it. This is the Dadnology HQ for the whole Four Nations: the original anime, its sequel The Legend of Korra, the Netflix live-action remake, and the new Avatar Studios era that's about to reopen the world.

The honest scoreboard up front: the anime is a 10/10 and a desert-island pick. Korra is a 9/10 — bolder, more grown-up, occasionally uneven, but home to some of the franchise's very best hours. The Netflix live-action is an 8/10 — a genuinely good remake that still can't touch the cartoon. We review the anime and Korra book by book, because each is a climb, not a flat line, and a single blanket score would hide where they each peak.

Below you'll find every season review, our spoiler-light watch order, a beginner's guide to bending and the Four Nations, a deep-dive on the origin of the Avatar (Korra's stunning "Beginnings" two-parter), and reading/playing guides to the canon comics, the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels, and the games. The throughline: we judge all of it by whether it earns a place in a busy parent's limited, kid-interrupted free time — and most of this earns it easily.

Thematic Pillars

🎛️ The Dadnology Avatar Standard

A 10 from us means 'perfect for what it set out to do,' not 'flawless object' — and Avatar: The Last Airbender is the rare show that clears that bar for the whole household. So we hold everything carrying the Avatar name to that test: does it respect the world's emotional honesty, and does it respect your time? The cartoon earns its 10 by growing with its audience. Korra earns its 9 by daring to age the story up. The live-action earns its 8 by taking the source seriously. Anything that coasts on the logo without doing the work doesn't get graded on a curve here.
