LEGO Just Built the Console That Started It All

LEGO and Sony used today’s State of Play Japan broadcast to reveal the first-ever LEGO PlayStation (72306) - a 1,911-piece, near 1:1 replica of the original 1994 console and its controller, complete with two hidden dioramas built into the case. It lands October 4, 2026, with LEGO Insiders getting three days of early access starting October 1.

Why It Matters for Dads

The pitch here isn’t really “buildable console” - plenty of sets do that. It’s what’s hiding inside it. Pop the case open and there are two dioramas built into the shell: a mini Gran Turismo track with tiny cars, and an Ape Escape scene with the game’s red or blue monkey helmet. Both can be displayed loose or tucked back inside, and the console keeps working buttons for Open and Power plus a controller that actually plugs in. That’s the detail that turns this from “a grey box” into the kind of set worth telling the story behind while you build it.

At $179.99 for 1,911 pieces it sits solidly in adult-display territory next to LEGO’s other 18+ sets, not impulse-buy toy pricing - closer to our LEGO PlayStation than a pocket-money pickup.
