Why September 2026 Is So Full: Everyone Is Running From GTA 6

September is absurdly full, and there is one reason: GTA 6 lands on 19 November, and nobody wants to be anywhere near it. November — normally the busiest month in games — is a ghost town, and everything that would have gone there has piled into these four weeks instead.

For you that is mostly good news. There are more than a dozen releases here worth a dad’s limited evenings, and they are spread well enough that you are rarely choosing between two on the same day. The one exception is Thursday 24 September, which has three big ones stacked on it.

September is also, quietly, the month the Switch 2 catches up: three of these dates are ports of games that came out elsewhere months ago.

There is also one game that every release calendar still has wrong, which we will get to at the end, because being told what is not coming is worth as much as being told what is.

Nintendo Switch 2 (opens in a new tab)

Three of this month's releases have a Switch 2 version, and two of them are native rather than a cloud fudge — the strongest month the console has had since launch.

Early September: Two Big Swings in Two Days

The Blood of Dawnwalker arrives on 3 September for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It comes from Rebel Wolves, the studio founded by people who led The Witcher 3, and the premise is doing a lot of work: you are human by day and a vampire by night in 14th-century Europe, and the game runs on a clock rather than a quest log. That is either the most interesting structural idea in an RPG this year or an enormous headache, and we genuinely do not know which yet. Onimusha: Way of the Sword lands the very next day, 4 September, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. This is the first new Onimusha in more than twenty years, and Capcom did something almost nobody does: they moved it three weeks forward, from 25 September to the 4th. Studios delay games. They do not usually pull them earlier unless the thing is finished and they know it.

For a certain kind of dad this is the release of the month by a distance. Onimusha was a PS2 game you played in a shared flat with the curtains shut, and the pitch here — Musashi, an Edo-era Kyoto twisted by clouds of malice, a sword you actually have to time — is aimed squarely at whether that still works on a man with a mortgage. We will find out in the same week you do.

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush arrives 10 September on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, and it is the most kid-shaped thing all month. Four open islands, free-roaming challenges, and track building — no reading required to get going, which is the single most underrated feature in a game you hand to a six-year-old. Milestone moved it forward from 24 September, which is twice now this month that a studio has pulled a date earlier rather than later.

Valheim 1.0 arrives 9 September, and after five years in early access that number means something. The Deep North biome finishes the map, PS5 and Switch 2 versions land alongside it, and — the part that actually matters in a household — there is full crossplay between every platform. If you have been waiting to build a longhouse with someone who does not own your console, this is the week.

Mid-September: The One Your Kid Will Ask About

Marvel’s Wolverine is out 15 September, PS5 only. Insomniac has been making this since before the Spider-Man sequel shipped, and it is the only genuine platform exclusive of the month.

It is also mature-rated, which is the part that matters in a house with children in it. Logan is a character who solves problems with knives that come out of his hands, and Insomniac has been open that they are not softening that. Your ten-year-old will have seen the trailer, will know it exists, and will make a case. We wrote the age guide for Marvel’s Wolverine precisely because that conversation was coming, and the short version is that this is not the Spider-Man compromise — there is no “it’s basically a superhero game” reading available here.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight reaches Switch 2 on 18 September, along with the Mayhem Collection DLC that adds playable Joker and Harley Quinn. Worth being precise: this is not a new game. It came out on 22 May on PS5, Xbox and PC, and several release calendars list the September date as a launch, which will annoy anyone who buys it twice. If you already own it, the DLC is the news. If you have a Switch 2 and have been waiting, this is your version, and it is the one to hand a six-year-old. It also pairs neatly with our ranking of the LEGO Batmobile sets if the game sends anyone looking for bricks.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave lands 17 September on Switch 2, and it is the month’s biggest Nintendo release by a distance. Four protagonists, four separate routes, grid-based tactical battles — which is either exactly your kind of evening or exactly not, and there is very little middle ground with this series. If you have never tried one, the four-route structure makes this an unusually forgiving place to start.

Two Point Hospital: Full Health Collection reaches Switch 2 the day before, on the 16th, digitally — the physical edition follows in November. Another catch-up rather than a launch, but a management sim with everything bundled is a good fit for a handheld you play in twenty-minute bursts.

EA Sports FC 27 technically opens on 18 September for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus buyers, a week before the 25 September standard release. This is an annual fixture and you already know whether you are buying it. We mention the date only because the week-early access is a paid upgrade dressed as a perk, and it is worth knowing that is what you are paying for.

Late September: Arrakis, and Two Sequels on One Friday

Dune: Awakening arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 22 September, day one on Game Pass. The important detail is not the console port but the single-player mode, which launches the same day on every platform. At PC release this was a survival MMO, which meant committing to other people’s schedules — a category of game that does not survive contact with bedtime routines. A version you can play alone, for forty minutes, is a different proposition entirely, and Game Pass makes trying it free if you are already subscribed.

24 September is the crowded day of the month, and none of it is for the kids. Control Resonant is Remedy’s sequel to Control, worldwide on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Silent Hill: Townfall lands the same day on PS5 and PC — a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set in Scotland, from Screen Burn with Annapurna and Konami, and notably not a remake. And Shinobi: Art of Vengeance finally reaches Switch 2, the third catch-up port on this list. If you want one: Remedy has a better record than almost anyone at this scale.

Then 29 September puts two sequels on the same day.

Minecraft Dungeons II is the family pick of the month and it is not close. Mojang’s dungeon crawler drops the building entirely: four players, one screen, pick up a sword, hit things. There is no tutorial wall and no crafting menu to explain, which is exactly why the first one worked with young kids. It is on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2 and PC, and day one on Game Pass. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered lands the same day, and it is a free upgrade if you already own the game. That is worth saying plainly, because “remaster” usually means “buy it again”. The genuinely new thing is a native Switch 2 version — the first time the full game, expansions included, runs properly on a Nintendo handheld. CD Projekt announced it at gamescom five weeks before release, which we covered in our Opening Night Live recap. If you have never played it, the Witcher saga hub is where to start; if you have, this is the excuse.

What We Are Not Recommending, and Why

Trine 6: Together in Time is not coming in September. It was moved to 4 March 2027, announced on 25 August, and at the time of writing at least two major release calendars still list it for 17 September.

We are calling that out because it is the exact game a lot of dads would have circled. Trine is four-player co-op puzzle-platforming, it works with kids, and it is the sort of thing that gets added to a shopping list in August and paid for in September. If a calendar told you it was coming this month, it was wrong. The developers say they are adding a new puzzle mode and reworking combat and online play, which is the good reason for a delay rather than the bad one — but it is six months out, not four weeks.

Dadnology Take

If you buy one thing this month, make it Onimusha: Way of the Sword — not because we know it is good, but because a publisher pulling a release three weeks forward is the most honest signal you get in this industry, and because the last one came out when most of us had considerably more free evenings.

If you have children in the room, wait for the 29th and get Minecraft Dungeons II. It is on Game Pass, so the trial costs nothing, and four-player couch co-op that needs no explanation is rarer than it should be.

And if you own The Witcher 3 already, put a note in the calendar for the 29th and re-download it for free. That is the best value in September by a distance, and it requires nothing from you but the patience to wait four weeks.

The Switch 2 is quietly having its best month since launch, with native versions of Onimusha, LEGO Batman and the Witcher remaster all landing inside four weeks — worth knowing if you have been undecided.

What is the biggest game released in September 2026?

Marvel’s Wolverine on 15 September, if you own a PS5 — it is the only true platform exclusive of the month and the one with the most attention on it. If you want the game most likely to still be talked about next year, Onimusha: Way of the Sword on 4 September is the more interesting bet, because it is the first new entry in the series in over twenty years.

Which September 2026 games can I play with my kids?

Minecraft Dungeons II on 29 September is the clear one: four-player co-op, no building, no tutorial wall, and day one on Game Pass so you can try it before buying. LEGO Batman arrives on Switch 2 on 18 September and is fine from about six upward. Marvel’s Wolverine is mature-rated and is not a family game, whatever your kid tells you.

Is Dune Awakening worth it on console?

It is a better proposition on console than it was at PC launch, because the single-player mode arrives on the same day across every platform, so you are no longer signing up for a survival MMO you have to schedule around. It is day one on Game Pass, which makes it the lowest-risk way to find out whether the Arrakis survival loop holds you.

Do I need to buy The Witcher 3 again for the remaster?

No. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is a free upgrade on 29 September if you already own the game on a qualifying platform. What is genuinely new is the native Switch 2 version, which is the first time the full game has run properly on a Nintendo handheld.
