Two Directs, Two Mornings, One 40th Birthday
Nintendo has confirmed two separate broadcasts in two days. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs Tuesday, September 8 at 7am PT and runs roughly 30 minutes; a general Nintendo Direct follows on Wednesday, September 9 at the same time and runs roughly 45 minutes, with a Nintendo Treehouse: Live stream after it showing gameplay of selected titles.
Why It Matters for Dads
Nintendo giving a single series its own half-hour is not routine. Zelda turned 40 earlier this year, and the obvious thing to fill thirty minutes with is the Ocarina of Time remake — announced back in June for Switch 2, still without a release date, and quite possibly the only game this year that a 40-year-old and a 10-year-old will fight over equally. A 40th-anniversary show could just as easily be Switch Online back catalogue, amiibo, merchandise and a look at the live-action Zelda film due April 2027.
The timing question is the interesting one. A Swiss retailer briefly listed the remake for December 1, 2026 before pulling the page — unconfirmed, and worth a raised eyebrow, because December 1 is a Tuesday and Nintendo almost always ships on a Thursday or Friday. What is real is the squeeze around it: GTA 6 lands November 19, and the Switch 2 went up to $499.99 on September 1. If one household budget has to cover a console price rise and two headline games in six weeks, the date Nintendo picks decides which one gets bought.
