Turok Is Back, and It’s Bringing Friends

Sony’s State of Play Japan broadcast gave Saber Interactive’s Turok: Origins its first real gameplay showing, nearly two years after the initial reveal - and it confirmed this is a proper prequel to the 1997 classic, not just a nostalgia skin. It’s due Spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Turok: Origins — First Gameplay Trailer

Why It Matters for Dads

The original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was a Lost Valley of prehistoric threats; Origins widens that into dinosaurs and an alien race called Xenia, spread across multiple planets while a small warrior order tries to hold the line. The trailer showed three classes - a shield-tank, a scout and a ranged specialist - each with its own skill tree, plus DNA absorbed from downed enemies feeding progression, and free switching between first- and third-person combat depending on the moment. None of that is filler: it’s the difference between “one more retro shooter” and something with actual systems to dig into over a few months.

The part worth circling on a family calendar is the drop-in, drop-out co-op - up to four players per today’s reveal, playable across single-player campaign missions too. It’s the same appeal as our Halo: Combat Evolved retro co-op guide: a shooter built to be played with someone rather than alone in headphones. If PS5 is the platform of choice at home, our PlayStation 5 review is the place to check whether the console itself is still worth it before Turok arrives.

What’s Next

Spring 2027 is still a long runway, and Saber hasn’t confirmed pricing or a firm date beyond the season. Expect a proper trailer with story beats before the next major showcase - we’ll cover it as it firms up, and plan a full review once it’s in hand.

The Dadnology Take

Trading “dinosaurs in a valley” for “dinosaurs and aliens across multiple planets” is a real risk for a franchise this beloved, but the systems shown - class variety, a skill tree, real co-op - suggest Saber is building a game to be played with someone, not just a coat of nostalgia paint. Cautiously optimistic; the wait until Spring 2027 is the only real downside right now.

When does Turok: Origins release?

Spring 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Is Turok: Origins a sequel or a prequel?

A prequel - it’s set before the original 1997 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, following the Turok warrior order before the story fans already know.

Can you play Turok: Origins with your kids?

Not the young ones - expect an M-rating in line with every past Turok game. The drop-in co-op is the real family angle once teens and adults are involved, not little kids.
