LEGO ONE PIECE — Netflix. The one we’re most curious about: LEGO’s One Piece theme launched this summer, and an animated tie-in three months later is either very good timing or a very obvious one. Premieres Tuesday, September 29.

For the Whole Family: Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 — Disney+. Landed on the 23rd and the queue has cleared by now. We haven’t reviewed it yet, so there’s no verdict from us — but the series hub runs the first four in order if a refresher is due before this one.

Once the Kids Are in Bed: Mayday

Mayday — Apple TV+. Ryan Reynolds at full motor-mouth against Kenneth Branagh’s ex-KGB agent playing it completely straight. Ninety minutes, went straight to streaming, and is better than that description usually implies. If the Prime Video catalogue is more your speed this week, the 30-day trial also covers the new Catherine Zeta-Jones movie, Kill Jackie.

The Classic: The Bourne Identity (4.5/5)

The Bourne Identity — Netflix. Netflix just added the whole Bourne Collection, and it lands two weeks after we ranked all five films against Robert Ludlum’s novels. Still the only one that borrows anything real from the books — and still the best one.

East of Eden arrives Thursday, October 1 on Netflix. Florence Pugh leads Netflix’s new limited-series adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel — the streamer’s own headline drop for the month, buried under everything else landing the same day.

War

War arrives Thursday, October 1 on HBO Max. Dominic West and Sienna Miller as two rival London law firms tearing into a high-profile defamation case. Eight episodes, weekly on Thursdays through November 19.

American Horror Story: 13

American Horror Story: 13 arrives Thursday, October 1 on Hulu. FX’s anthology returns for its Halloween-timed thirteenth season — a new standalone story, the same unsettling house style.

Netflix’s October 1 horror-and-classics catalogue drop

Netflix’s October 1 catalogue drop lands Thursday, October 1. The Bourne Collection (all five films, our Classic pick above), the Twilight Saga, the Psycho trilogy, plus Love Actually, The Devil Wears Prada and a wall of Halloween horror — Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, I Know What You Did Last Summer. One of the biggest single-day catalogue dumps of the year.

Coven Academy

Coven Academy arrives Friday, October 2 on Disney+. A new witch-school series, all episodes streaming day one — a family-friendly alternative to the Netflix horror drop landing the same week.

Kill Jackie arrives Friday, October 2 on Prime Video. Catherine Zeta-Jones headlines this new Prime Video original.

Ranma 1/2

Ranma 1/2 arrives Saturday, October 3 on Netflix. Season 3 of the anime remake continues.

Blue Box arrives Sunday, October 4 on Netflix. Season 2 of the sports-romance anime lands the same day Lanterns wraps up — a quiet counter-programming pick if the DCU finale isn’t for everyone in the house.

Lanterns airs its finale on Sunday, October 4 on HBO Max, closing out an eight-episode run built as a slow-burn detective story rather than another origin. If you’ve been meaning to start it, this is the last week to catch up before the ending is common knowledge.

Still running

Ted Lasso season 4 continues on Apple TV+ (Wednesday, September 30). Ten episodes, back to the tighter season-one shape. Richmond isn’t the story any more, which is the most interesting decision the show has made since it started. Slow Horses season 6 continues on Apple TV+ (Wednesday, September 30). The other genuine event of the month: six episodes adapting Joe Country and Slough House, the books where the series stops circling its own history and walks into it. Six seasons in, it has never had a bad one.

Our top tip is LEGO ONE PIECE on Netflix, the animated tie-in to LEGO’s summer theme launch. For the whole family, Toy Story 5 has had a week to settle on Disney+. Once the kids are in bed, Mayday on Apple TV+ is 90 sharp minutes of Ryan Reynolds against Kenneth Branagh. And for a classic, Netflix just added the whole Bourne Collection, so The Bourne Identity is the one worth rewatching.
