What to watch this week: Mando and Grogu, the Gentlemen

This week at a glance

The Mandalorian and Grogu is on Disney+, which makes this the week Star Wars is back in the house whether you planned it or not — and LEGO put out its own version of the same story on the same day, so both halves of the sofa are covered. Away from that: The Gentlemen season 2 is the one to start if you want a series to fall into, the Spider-Man films turned up on Disney+ as a catalogue drop, and Reacher is one episode from a finale that has been earned.

Top tip of the week: The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu — Disney+. The first Star Wars film in five years, a 4/5 from us, and it works for the reason the show did: it stays small. Din and the kid, a job that goes wrong, no galaxy-ending stakes bolted on. Landed Wednesday rather than at the weekend, which is Disney putting it in front of families on purpose. Prime Video’s free trial covers most of what else is below if Disney+ isn’t already in the house.

For the whole family: LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian

LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian — Disney+. Three seasons of the live-action show retold as comedy in brick form, dropped the same day as the film. The version you put on when the seven-year-old wants what dad is watching, minus the Dark Troopers — and the double bill is the cheapest family evening on this list. If it lands the way it does here, LEGO Grogu (75446) is the set that follows it: 1,200 pieces, about 20cm of buildable Grogu in Beskar armour, and the only 5/5 in our Mandalorian shelf.

Once the kids are in bed: The Gentlemen season 2

The Gentlemen season 2 — Netflix. This is the one to start if you want a series to fall into rather than a film for one evening. Guy Ritchie back with Theo James and Kaya Scodelario, fast-talking and well-dressed violence, and episodes short enough that one does not eat the whole night — which is exactly how three of them disappear.

The classic: the Spider-Man double bill

Spider-Man: Far From Home and No Way Home — Disney+. The catalogue drop of the week, and the pair is the point: Far From Home sets up the mess, No Way Home spends it. No Way Home is the MCU film that rewards a rewatch more than a first watch, because you already know where it is going, and if the multiverse mechanics were a blur the first time, our explainer untangles them without spoiling the ending.

Mayday got buried and shouldn’t have

Mayday — Apple TV+. Landed on the 4th with almost no noise: Ryan Reynolds at full motor-mouth against Kenneth Branagh’s ex-KGB agent playing it completely straight. Ninety minutes, went straight to streaming, and is better than that usually implies.

Kraven the Hunter is a 3/5

Kraven the Hunter arrives Sunday 13 September on Disney+. Included with a caveat rather than enthusiasm: a committed Aaron Taylor-Johnson stuck in a film that never decides what it is. Worth a Sunday evening, not a night you were saving.

• Reacher season 4 — Prime Video, new episode Wednesday 9 September. The best thing running right now: a constant 4.5 in our book, and the last episode ended on a cliffhanger brutal enough that the week’s wait is a genuine annoyance. The finale is Wednesday 16 September, and Neagley starts the same day.
• Ted Lasso season 4 — Apple TV+, Wednesday 9 September. Ten episodes, back to the tighter season-one shape, and Richmond is not the story any more — the most interesting decision the show has made since it started.
• Lanterns — HBO Max, Sunday 13 September. The DCU going deliberately slow: a detective story with Green Lanterns in it rather than another origin, eight episodes finishing 4 October.

If you want animation

Two seasons worth the evening, neither of them new this week and both better than their reputation suggests:

• X-Men ‘97 season 2 — Disney+. A 4/5, and the one we would put a shade above season one: Apocalypse rises, Magneto falls, and the show earns both instead of trading on the nostalgia it opened with.
• Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 — Prime Video, the whole season at once, so it is the easier of the two to start on a weeknight. Season one was a 3.5/5 that took its time with a 1940s noir Gotham; season two finally puts the Joker in it.

Our top tip is The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first Star Wars film in five years and a 4 out of 5 from us, now on Disney+. It is a 3 out of 5 in our review. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is fully committed, but the film never settles on what kind of movie it wants to be. Worth a spare Sunday evening, not a night you were actually saving for something good.
