None of that needs a screen, and a Mac mini drawing a handful of watts at idle is a far better answer than leaving a laptop open on a shelf.

Then decide about automatic login, under Users and Groups. It is a genuine security trade: enabling it means the machine boots straight to a usable desktop with no password, so anyone with physical access to it has access to the account. Media serving is the most common and the most immediately appreciated by everyone else in the house. The machine holds the library, a server application indexes it, and every television, tablet and phone can play from it.
Backups. Enable it as a Time Machine destination and every Mac in the house backs up to it over the network without anyone doing anything. This is the job that quietly justifies the whole machine on the day a laptop dies.
Photo library. A permanently-on Mac is a sensible home for the family photo library, particularly if phones sync into it. It is always awake when a phone wants to hand something over.
Automation and agents. A machine that runs unattended is the natural place for anything scheduled or long-running.
